With Eyes of Diamond, Hair of Gold finally being capped off with a proper ending, the writing phase is complete. From here on, I’ll be in the editing phase. That will entail multiple readings of the story, to give me a better feel for how the different parts of the story work together with the whole, to find and fix any of the odd mistakes that crop up with far too great a frequency, and to add any additional content that might come to along the way. It’s unlikely that I’ll be able to get all this finished before the end of this year, but a January release looks like a target that I can hit.
So far, my reading back through the story is leaving me satisfied. The writing is solid, the characters are varied and interesting, and the mystery is not so easy to figure out. It’s also not just a rehash of the story and mystery from Murder at the End of the World, which was one of my biggest goals. I wanted to create a location and story and mystery that were every bit as compelling, but without just reusing all the same ideas. So far, so good, but there’s still quite a bit more work yet to be done.
